My Favourite Contemporary Cover of 2012 is:

My Biggest Contemporary Surprise of 2012 Was:

The Rest Is Silence by Scott Fotheringham is the kind of book that is simply underrated by media and publicity in consideration that it comes from a smaller publishing company, Goose Lane Editions, and though I expected it to be only about biology, science, and the environment, the novel itself is so much more in our assumptions and its philosophical standpoint. It’s a wonderful book that I would encourage anyone to pick up and read! If you’re interested in reading my review, you can read it here.

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon Candy Challenge!

08.16.2012

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez / @ZaraAlexis

Thanks to The Book Smartie for hosting this sweet challenge. (Just thinking about it actually makes me a little hungry…).

The Book Smartie has asked participants to:

…simply leave a comment down below – either to immediately tell everyone about your snacking – habits or to link us to a post on your blog.

***

If you know me or have been keeping up with my posts on this blog, you’ll know that I’m somewhat anal-retentive when it comes to my books. I like them new, well-kept, with no creases, page flaps, or booking binding cracks!—At least until I read them of course.

Which plays a role in my eating habits while I read. I…um…can’t. I just don’t want to spill, I don’t know…tomato sauce or grease up the pages with sticky fingers and leftover, stray crumbs.

I will, however, read a book with a hot cup of coffee or tea—and if I’m brave enough and disciplined enough, I’ll snack on some wonderful treats like:

Toasted Naan with sour cream

***

Peanut Butter Cookies

***

Corn Chips

***

Peach Sour Rings

***

I know these snacks aren’t healthy (well, except for the naan), but I can’t help it! I love to munch on these while reading!!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon: A Book for Every Season Challenge. 08.16.2012

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon: A Book for Every Season Challenge!

08.16.2012

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez / @ZaraAlexis

Thanks to Kristilyn at Reading in Winter for hosting this fun challenge! She’s asked participants to:

Name the perfect book for each season of the year! The book can either have the name of the season in the title, or — and this is the preferred way! — the book can take place in that specific season.

***

Oh! The seasons do have their effect on me. I’m a winter baby born in the cold month of January. And I tend to be a little more moody when the skies are grey. As much as I enjoy the sun, my favourite season is Autumn when I can enjoy the changing colours of the leaves.

Books, too, have their temperate season. Here are titles I’ve chosen:

***

Spring

***

Ernest Hemingway

***

The Torrents of Spring by Ernest Hemingway

***

Summer

***

Rosalind Miles

***

Guenevere, Queen of the Summer Country by Rosalind Miles

***

Winter

***

Anne Michaels

***

The Winter Vault by Anne Michaels

***

Fall

***

Gabriel Garcia-Marquez

***

The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez

***

And just for fun, here are some weather related titles on my TBR list!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon Wednesday Update. 08.16.2012

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon Wednesday Update

08.16.2012

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez / @ZaraAlexis

Okay, read-a-thoners! Must…keep…it up! The eyeglasses, the dividing bookmark, the second, sometimes third cup of coffee, and the quiet required to concentrate on character, plot, and narrative. Are YOU still reading? I am—a little. If we could only stop everything else we’re doing and just READ. Yes, that would be my utopia.

Here’s my update for Wednesday:

Wednesday

Number of pages I’ve read today:  164 pages

Number of books I’ve read today: 0

Total number of pages read to-date: 362 pages

Total number of books I’ve read for the read-a-thon: 1

Books Read: The Red House by Mark Haddon

Books Reading: The Emperor of Paris by C.S. Richardson

Other accomplishments: I was able to complete the Word Search Challenge throughout the day, continue to think about my review of The Red House, and also participated in my first Bout of Books Twitter Chat.
