Stuffing the Bibliotaphe Closet

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez / @ZaraAlexis

This meme “Stuffing the Bibliotaphe Closet” was inspired by the original meme that I participated in and which many of you may be familiar with: “Stacking the Shelves” hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. My posts will take the format of books and bookish items (including SWAG) that I have:

  • received from publishers and/or authors for review
  • purchased
  • received as a gift or prize through winning a contest

I’m Officially a HarperCollins Canada Fan!—

And Why Mugs Matter

05.24.2013

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez / @ZaraAlexis

HarperCollins Canada is one the leading and largest book publishers in Canada, so of course, I’ve been following them on all my social media accounts including Twitter and Facebook. (And yes, I do read their books!)

How timely it is that they kindly ran a contest for their Facebook fans a few days ago in tradition of sending out their HCC coffee mugs. Two years ago, they sent over 1000 mugs—and this year, they’re sending out 50 new mugs to 50 lucky fans.

What did we fanatical fans have to do to enter? Simple: email HCC and tell them why we love their Facebook page!

and will happily attend book events to meet authors and other “bookish” people.

Aside from loving and collecting books, I also happen to be MAD about mugs. I’m not kidding. My husband is actually quite annoyed with my mug fetish and complains any time and every time I pick up a mug to look at it at a store,

We don’t have room for any more of your mugs. You already have too many. That’s enough!

And I have to do everything I can in my willpower to. Put. That. Mug. Down. And walk away. (Whew!)

If you don’t believe me, here are but a few of my favourite mugs in my collection:

This is the coffee mug I drank out of while I studied Creative Writing and English Literature at York University.

These are my Chinese mugs, the ones I use when I seep and drink my green tea.

***

***

This is my “Cha cha cha” mug, which has those words inscribed inside it. Fitting since my nickname is Chacha.

This is my Z monogram mug from Indigo. You know…so people are clear that my name isn’t Sara.

mug - z

***

This is my peacock mug. This is the only mug I use to drink my tea.

***

If you don’t know the logos of these mugs, well…let’s just say you aren’t addicted to coffee like I am (notice I own two).

mugs - starbucks

***

This is my mug for The Bibliotaphe Closet. The one I use to diffuse stress while posting articles on my book blog.

***

This is my HUGE coffee mug—which, after realizing I’m never able to finish coffee this size, it now holds my pencils.

mug - mug of coffee

***

This is my Penguin Books mug. I use this mug when I read Penguin Classics.

mug - penguin

***

These are two of my favourite coffee mugs from two of my favourite book publishers: McClelland & Stewart and Random House of Canada. I especially drink from these mugs when I read poetry.

And now, I’m ecstatic to discover the news that I’m one of the 50 lucky winners of the HarperCollins Canada Facebook Fan Contest!

And in a few weeks, I’ll be receiving one of these!! YESSSSSS!!!!!

(Now, if I could only add a Simon & Schuster mug, a Goose Lane Editions mug, and a Constable & Robinson mug to my collection—the publishers I also review for…)

Do you have a special mug you drink from when reading a great book?

Are You Mad About Books? Good!

Because It’s HCC March Madness!

03.04.2013

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez / @ZaraAlexis

For book lovers everywhere, the month of March brings a lot of possibilities: from a sense of finally moving away from the drudgery of a cold, harsh winter to the hope of more sunshine (and new spring releases); to the opportunity to go on March Break to read the piles of books that have been waiting patiently on their bookshelves—and now the opportunity to not only VOTE for your favourite books in a battle of books published by HarperCollins Canada (HCC), but also WIN the entire set of 64 contenders for your very own collection!

Is HarperCollins Canada (HCC) mad?

Uh-huh.

Mad about books just as much as other book lovers are!

Mad enough to give us our say on which books should win the reigning title of Best Book for HCC March Madness.

Mad enough to host this book event for the entire month of March!

Mad enough to give out book prizes to its most enthusiastic cheerleaders!

And mad enough to award one winner the entire collection of 64 books at the end of the event!

***

How mad are you about books?

***

Are you mad enough to host your own book blog because you’re obsessed with reading — even though you already have a full schedule of other things to do?

Are you mad enough about books to clear your schedule to attend much-coveted book events?

Are you mad enough to wait in a two-hour line-up to meet and greet your favourite authors?

Are you mad enough to create a personal book budget—and then break it—every time you enter a book store?

Are you mad enough to remember quotes and passages from your favourite books?

Are you mad enough about books that you recognize publisher logos from afar?

Are you mad enough about books that you’re on almost every social media network with friends and followers who are primarily book lovers or are in the book industry?

Are you mad enough about books that you’ve sold your soul to Rafflecopter in the hopes of winning a copy of a book amongst thousands of other entries?

Are you mad enough about books that you often buy bookish jewellery and accessories?

Are you mad enough about books that you think of new ways to organize and re-organize your books on your shelves?

Are you mad enough about books that you find your books pretty much everywhere?

Are you mad enough about books that you look forward to time alone so that you can actually sit down and read?

Are you mad enough about books that your family and friends often come to you for advice on what to read or not to read?

Are you mad enough about books secretly dream of owning your own private library?

Are you mad enough about books that you’re a great advocate of literacy?

Are you mad enough about books that you’re genuinely pleased when you see other people reading?

Are you mad enough about books to VOTE EVERY SINGLE DAY in the HCC March Madness event?

If you’ve said yes to most, if not all, the questions above, you’re the perfect candidate for the HCC March Madness Event!

HCC March Madness: Day 3

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez

YES! VICTORY!!!! Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson BIT the win for yesterday’s vote!

(If you feel like joining me in celebration, please turn up the volume and sing along with me and Freddie Mercury! Click on his photo for the video!)

Now, let’s get down to business for Day 3 of the HCC March Madness!

You can vote for:

The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory

Do you want to “cleave” to Anne of Cleves who has won the crown of England in The Boleyn Inheritance?  Are you intrigued by religious upheaval and political uncertainty? If yes, then go ahead, vote for the women in this English dramatic adventure.

Bones of the Hills by Conn Iggulden

Or should the third book in the Conqueror series, CONQUER this battle?

It’s an epic story of Genghis Khan  who has taken his armies against cities  and finds trouble rising west of the Mongolian plains.

You know me. I’ll always vote for the more compelling read, which I think is the Bones of the Hills! It’s been rated 5 out of 5 stars by its readers on Chapters-Indigo, which tells me, this book is popular for good reason.

Okay, so I haven’t read it yet, but GENGHIS KHAN?

Reading this historical fiction of how he came to power by uniting many of the  nomadic tribes of of northeast Asia is fascinating to me. I am Asian, after all!

You’re not Asian, eh? That’s okay.

You’re a READER! And today, you can be a VOTER, too!

So, go ahead. Vote for your book of choice in the battle of HCC March Madness.

And help make the difference for these books in coming closer to the HCC March Madness Crowning Title!

Don’t forget to include the hashtag #HCCMarchMadness in your tweet!

And to HAVE FUN!

Voting closes at 8:00 p.m.

HCC March Madness: Day 2

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez

Okay, so if you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know that my book of choice, Angus, Thongs, and Full-Throttle Snogging did NOT make the next round.

It’s okay! As long as people are reading, voting, and LOVING books, I’m good. But, this March Madness isn’t about me! It’s about reviewing what we all love in the book community and pushing great titles out into the world to bask in all their well-deserved “readable” glory!

So, what’s up for today’s battle, you ask?

Non-fiction! Which means “non-terrible!”

The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson

OR

The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery

This is a tough one for me…because I’m a word-lover AND a tree hugger!

What will it be?

Words?

Or weather?

As much as I love the environment, it already gets a lot of press! And I’m an “underdog” kind of girl.

And I LOVE WORDS. I’m a reader. I’m a writer.

Words give me the freedom to know, speak, write, and understand.

And the weather…is so unpredictable.

I ask for sun, it gives me rain! I ask for a snow storm so I can stay home and read (and the forecast claimed to give us at least 15 cm) and all I get is slush!

So, today, I’m voting for

The Mother Tongue!

I’d really like to know how we got from:

O.E. lufu “love, affection, friendliness,” from P.Gmc. *lubo (cf. O.Fris. liaf, Ger. lieb, Goth. liufs “dear, beloved;” not found elsewhere as a noun, except O.H.G. luba, Ger. Liebe), from PIE *leubh- “to care, desire, love” (cf. L. lubet, later libet “pleases;” Skt. lubhyati “desires;” O.C.S. l’ubu “dear, beloved;” Lith. liaupse “song of praise”). Meaning “a beloved person” is from early 13c. The sense “no score” (in tennis, etc.) is 1742, from the notion of “playing for love,” i.e. “for nothing” (1670s). Love-letter is attested from mid-13c.; love-song from early 14c. To be in love with (someone) is from c.1500. Love life “one’s collective amorous activities” is from 1919, originally a term in psychological jargon. Love affair is from 1590s. Phrase for love or money “for anything” is attested from 1580s. To fall in love is attested from early 15c. The phrase no love lost (between two people) is ambiguous and was used 17c. in ref. to two who love each other well (c.1640) as well as two who have no love for each other (1620s).

Or from this:

to

This book might even help me come to terms with the movement from:

“Oh my God!” to OMG!

(Because I’m of the generation that prefers the former, rather than the latter.)

You can disagree with me.

But it won’t matter if you don’t vote!

You have until 8:00 p.m. tonight.

Have fun and don’t forget to include the hashtag #HCCMarchMadness!

HCC March Madness Begins! Day 1

By Zara D. Garcia-Alvarez

Okay, book lovers. Time to go MAD!

The first two books up for battle are:

Beastly by Alex Finn

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

Guess what I’m voting for?

I want ANGUS, THONGS, AND FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING!

C’mon, with a title like that, how can you say no? Seriously. And by the way, Angus is NOT a cow. No beef there. And look at him on that cover! He’s wearing a crown! It’s subliminal.

It MEANS that THIS BOOK should wear the CROWN in this battle!!!!

How can you say no to Angus, the cat???

Would you DARE say no to that? C’mon, now.

As for thongs, I might just rip mine off if this book doesn’t win, so please VOTE!

(Please vote—I really need my underwear.)

And I really want this post to stay G-rated, so please vote BEFORE I post any images that have to do with FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING!

Let’s keep this battle clean, people!

You may click on the above links to vote for your book (yes, I mean: ANGUS, THONGS, AND FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING!).

Vote:

1. Go to FACEBOOK and “like” the image

2. Vote on Twitter and include the hashtag #HCCMarchMadness

3. Tell your family and friends. (Yes, BRIBE them.)

4. We have until 8:00 p.m. tonight.

GO MAD!!!!!
